Google India’s internet safety campaign, Be NetSmart
Google India, in association with the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has just expanded the scope of its nationwide internet safety campaign, named Be NetSmart. This was first introduced in February 2008 and largely focused on school children above sixth standard.
‘Be NetSmart’ is an interesting, interactive campaign that educates students, their parents and teachers. According to the Internet search engine giant, the campaign looks to celebrate ‘the goodness of the internet, applaud its huge impact on society and also educate India’s youth on internet safety.’
The second phase of the same campaign was launched in August, initiated in schools across Chennai and Kolkata in September. The campaign is now being conducted in schools in New Delhi.
The sessions in schools broadly cover topics, which range from the proper use of the internet and its growing role in our lives, to apt, responsible online conduct like the need to ensure confidentiality, safety of downloading content, care in posting pictures, and caution in chatting.
During the ‘Be NetSmart Week’ campaign, Google volunteers along with police authorities visited the various schools. According to Google India, the campaign has already reached over 36,000 students since February 08.
